Homework Tips
Understand the Assignment. Know exactly what your teacher wants you to do. If you were given a printed assignment sheet, bring it with you to the library. Write down the assignment in class. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to remember.
Plan Ahead. Know your deadline! Start early. Do not wait until the day before your report is due. Materials may not be available, and you need time to read, write and polish your assignment. Your classmates (and probably some students from other schools) will be looking for the same material you need. If you are allowed a choice of topics, PLEASE visit the library before you decide. You will want to pick a topic which has lots of available material.
Come Prepared. Bring your library card. Bring money for the copier, or to replace a lost library card (50¢ for youth/teens, $1.00 for adults). Bring pencils, pens, paper or notecards. Bring any textbooks that will help you.
Know and Respect Library Rules. Please work quietly, and take care of the materials you use. Return items you check out on time, so that other people can use them. Check to see what time the library closes. Your assignment may take longer to complete than you expect, and certain materials may have to be used in the library.
Ask for Help. If you don't know how to find materials, or how to use a certain reference source, ask one of the librarians. Remember that you can use encyclopedias, magazine articles and the Internet for some assignments. If you have searched really hard and still can't find what you need, ask the librarian for a "Teacher Notification Form". This will show that you have tried to complete your assignment.
